Bodybuilding - What To Look For In A Protein Powder

When it comes to getting in your protein intake on a bodybuilding plan, protein powder can definitely make the weight gain goal easier.

Muscle Protein

For heavier guys who are already in the 170-200 pound range and trying to really push their body to the limits as far as weight gain is concerned, they will be requiring in the neighborhood of 170-300 grams of protein per day. As you can imagine, if you tried to get this all from meat and dairy sources, you'd be running up quite the grocery bill, not to mention feel like you are constantly eating.

Muscle Protein

That said, what should you think about when buying a protein powder? Here are the variables to keep in mind.

Price

Obviously, price is going to play a role for many people. You only have so big of a budget for muscle building supplements so making wise decisions on what to buy, what not to buy, and what you can afford to buy cheaper on is definitely going to be beneficial.

Generally speaking protein powder quality will vary with price, however the more important thing to look at is type of protein powder. Concentrate's or casein varieties are typically more expensive, while straight whey powder tends to be cheaper.

The more expensive protein, usually, the more tailor-made it is to meet an individual goal (such as slow digesting, quick digesting, extra amino acid content, and so on.

This is not to say that particular brands do not affect how much a protein costs - they most definitely do. Shop around a bit so you can find a brand you like, but that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The store you purchase it at too can impact price, with larger more recognized stores usually being cheaper.

Don't forget to check online also, as there are a wide variety of online stores selling protein products now.

Mixability

While this is something that's a little harder to test before buying, ask at the store if they have a small sample that you could mix and try. Many stores now do this as they realize it's cheaper than if customers are constantly trying to return products.

Protein powder will mix differently in different liquids as well, with water usually being the best and thicker fluids such as milk being slightly worse. Of course if you always blend your shakes, this will not be an issue.

Vitamin and Mineral Content

Finally, the last thing to think about that very often gets overlooked when purchasing a protein powder is what its vitamin and mineral content is. Many protein powders are now fortified with a variety of vitamins and minerals, so if you're looking to cut back on your muscle building supplement budget, eliminating the need for a multi (if the protein powder offers really good coverage) or other individual nutrients you purchase, is definitely going to be beneficial.

Calcium in particular is one to pay attention to, as some protein powders will offer just as much calcium per serving as a glass of milk.

So, next time you're on the hunt for a protein powder, be sure you keep these three factors in mind.

Taste will also obviously be a huge deciding factor as most people like to enjoy the drink (while some just pound it back without worry!), but this is a largely individual basis.
